Winston Churchill once wrote, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”
In recent years, there have been some extraordinary examples of how businesses have changed into what we know them as now. For example, Starbucks did not always sell fresh-brewed coffee to customers. In 1971, they started out by selling espresso makers and coffee beans. In 1983, Starbucks founder, Howard Schultz, visited Italy and sparked a determination in him to actually brew and sell Starbucks coffee in a European-style coffeehouse.
Wrigley didn’t always sell chewing gum. In fact, William Wrigley Jr was a soap and baking powder salesman and used to give gum away for free to people who bought from him to make his product more economically attractive. The gum then turned out to be more attractive than his soap and “Wrigley’s” as we know it today was born.
However, not all changes are planned, and the impact the changes have on us and our business as often planned less. If this year’s pandemic wasn’t enough to create a business strategy rethink, Freelance Journalist Jenny Stallard also moved to a new house from the city of London to rural Oxfordshire.
How did the move impact Jenny’s freelance business? What about her close network of freelancers who lived near her? And what does the future look like? All these questions and more are answered in this week’s podcast.
